Would you prefer to collaborate or compete?

A women smiling

I have been working with a large cohort of non-profit organisations, and one of the participants asked me if I could give her some practical ideas to collaborate, as some people have the same or similar business ideas or businesses instead of competing how do we collaborate?

My response was:

“Thank you for raising a great question. I’ll do my best to answer it openly”

“As the course continues, you will find that collaborations will develop amongst yourselves, along with a true understanding of what that means. Yesterday, it was evident that a number of you are considering collaborating. However, allow the course to prepare you, get to understand who is in the group, and then build that trust. I need to meet each of you on a personal level to assist you in developing and strengthening your offering. Then I can assist in helping you to build together. You’ll find that no one will compete against each other. You will find that you will find strength, support, and guidance from amongst each other. Give it time, and you will gain more than just money. Most people who are on the course are looking for a long-term secure opportunity. If you meet anyone from the previous course, they will say that jointly they will continue to support each other, and those who have similar businesses are not only running their own business but offering joint opportunities”.

I hope together we can continue to strengthen our relationships and our businesses.

Business Owners Supporting Each Other

""

Do you know what’s better than a bunch of business owners supporting each other at a Business Development Workshop? Nothing.

Support each other by planning future events and sharing information, together.

Just support and have the willingness to applaud each other as you succeed in your given vocation.

As business owners living in this fast-paced world, we often find ourselves overwhelmed by the amount of pressure we put on ourselves. Why?

Building A Team

As a small business owner, take risks with the employees you hire.

You need to hire people who are smarter than you, better than you, and different from you. And if they are more experienced than you, that’s even better.

It’s important to hire people who can do things better than you and give them some autonomy over their work—then let them do it without you getting in the way. It’s also a good idea to hire someone whose skills complement yours: an expert in sales might be useful for a company with no sales team or lots of new products; a person with a strong technical background could help an engineering-heavy organization build new products faster.

Your employees are a valuable resource, and they can help you to build a successful business. If they’re not able to do it because of lack of time or experience, ask them how they’d feel about receiving training or mentoring.

If that doesn’t work, then try hiring someone with the right skill set who will help you grow your business!

In wrapping up, building a dynamic team is akin to crafting a beautiful mosaic—each piece, with its distinct colour and shape, contributes to a larger, cohesive masterpiece. Remember, it’s not just about hiring the best; it’s about recognizing the brilliance in others that you might lack.

Text quote: When building a team, aways look for individuals that challenge you!
When building a team, always look for individuals that challenge you!

Surrounding oneself with individuals who challenge, complement, and sometimes even outshine you isn’t a sign of weakness but of wisdom. It’s like having diverse spices in a dish, where each one enhances the flavour of the other.

As you chart your journey in team building, be daring, invest deeply in the relationships, and cherish every learning curve, both yours and theirs. After all, it’s the personal connections we make along the way that turn our business ventures into meaningful stories.

Don’t Get Comfortable, Grow Your Business.

The longer you run a business, the less comfortable it becomes. This is a good thing because it means that your business is growing. But the changes that come with growth can be scary if you aren’t prepared for them.

Here are some ways to keep your business growing without letting yourself get too comfortable:

  1. You cannot grow a business if you’re comfortable.
  2. You have to keep pushing yourself and staying hungry.
  3. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being willing to take risks and be flexible in order for your business to succeed.
  4. You will fail at times, but don’t let that discourage you from trying again. In fact, I encourage it! If there’s some failure along the way (and there most likely will be) then use that as an opportunity for learning and growth.

Failure is part of the process when working towards success so don’t feel like a failure because of something that didn’t work out exactly how it was planned or expected – instead embrace what happened and learn from those mistakes so they won’t happen again!

As you face the inevitable challenges of business, remember: that the unease you feel today paves the path for tomorrow’s successes.
